Classes

In Newfoundland and Labrador, you must have a valid driver's licence for the kind of vehicle you wish to drive. Listed below are the classes of driver's licences and types of vehicles you may drive with each class.

If you drive in more than one class of driver's licence your licence class will be the main category of vehicle you drive and the other classes will be listed in the endorsements. For example, you may hold a Class 5 driver's licence with a Class 6 endorsement.

8Licence that permits the holder to operate traction engine vehicles only.
7Learner in Class 5, 6, or 8 (will be phased out by January 2002).
6I Motorcycle Novice Driver Class 6, Level I (learner) 12 months reduced to 8 if an approved motorcycle education program is completed. Road test to exit this level.

Restrictions

  • Accompanied by a licenced driver with 4 years driving experience as a motorcycle driver, on another cycle or in a motor vehicle.
  • Novice driver must have Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0% and accompanying driver cannot exceed .05%.
  • No passengers
  • No upgrade to commercial class of licence.
  • Not permitted to drive after darkness ( one half hour before sunset to one half hour after sunrise).
  • Not permitted on highways where posted speed limit exceeds 80 km/h.
  • Pass road test to exit this level.
6II Motorcycle Novice driver Class 6, Level II

12 months duration
Restrictions

  • BAC of 0%
  • No upgrade to commercial class driver licence.
  • Not permitted to drive between midnight and 5 am.
6Full Motorcycle Licence
5I Novice Driver - Passenger vehicle and light truck Novice Driver Class 5, Level I (learner).
Must spend minimum of 12 months (may be reduced to 8 months with completion of an approved driver education program) at level 1. Road test to exit this level.

Restrictions

  • Accompanied by a licenced driver with 4 years driving experience as a Class 5 or higher.
  • Novice Driver must have Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0% and accompanying driver cannot exceed .05%.
  • No passengers, except accompanying driver parents or guardians may be present if novice is in an approved driver education program accompanied by a licenced instructor.
  • No upgrade to commercial class of licence.
  • Not permitted to drive between 12 midnight and 5 am.
  • Novice Driver sign required on rear of vehicle 5cm (2in) lettering must be black on white.
  • Pass road test to exit this level.
5II Passenger vehicle or light truck Novice Driver Class 5, Level II. Must spend 12 months at this level without suspension.

Restrictions

  • Passengers restricted to number of seat belts.
  • If driving between midnight and 5 a.m., must be accompanied by licenced driver with 4 years driving experience in Class 5 or higher (exemption for work purposes and novice must provide proof of working hours to police).
  • No upgrade to commercial class of licence.
5Regular Driver Class 5, permits the holder to operate all motor vehicles with not more than 2 axles and combination of vehicles where the towed vehicle does not exceed 4,500 kgs. Buses, taxis and ambulances while not carrying passengers, self propelled motor homes with 2 or more axles, farm tractors, fork lifts and emergency vehicles excluding ambulances, trucks designed for off highway use and vehicles commonly known as backhoes. You must have one (1) year as a class 5 driver before you can apply for a commercial class of driver's licence.
4Permits holder to operate taxis, ambulances, all Class 5 motor vehicles, buses up to 24 passengers.
3Permits holder to operate trucks with 3 or more axles including a combination of vehicles and other classes as shown by endorsements.
2Licence that permits the holder to operate all buses over 24 passengers and other classes as shown by endorsements.
1Licence that permits the holder to operate all semi-trailer trucks and other classes as shown by endorsements on the licence.
