Permits and Registration

Overweight and Over Dimensional Special Permits
Special Permits are required for the operation of a vehicle or combination of vehicles, object, structure or load that exceeds the weight or dimensions specified in the Vehicles Regulations.
Single Trip Commercial Vehicle Registration
To operate a commercial motor vehicle that is not
  1. registered in Newfoundland and Labrador, or
  2. registered with the International Registration Plan (IRP) for Newfoundland and Labrador, you must obtain a single trip commercial vehicle registration.
Fuel Tax
Out Of Province Vehicles
Any qualified motor vehicle that is not registered in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador must either
  1. register with the International Fuel Tax Association (IFTA), or
  2. obtain a fuel tax single trip permit.


Vehicles Registered in Newfoundland and Labrador
Any qualified motor vehicle that is registered in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and that will be traveling outside the Province must either
  1. register with the International Fuel Tax Association (IFTA), or
  2. obtain a fuel tax single trip permit from the applicable jurisdictions where travel will occur.

Vehicle Dimension and Weight Regulations

Axle Configuration Requirements
To be registered in Newfoundland and Labrador, as required, a vehicle must meet the axle configuration requirements as stipulated in the Vehicles Regulations of the Highway Traffic Act.

In Newfoundland and Labrador limitations for vehicle weights and dimensions are found in the Vehicles Regulations under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), and based on the vehicle type and axle configuration

Salvage Vehicles

The Stolen and Wrecked Vehicle Monitoring Program is a national program designed to ensure consumer protection and public safety by:

  1. preventing the registration of stolen vehicles using the VIN (vehicle identification number) of a vehicle written off, which is falsely declared to have been rebuilt; and
  2. ensuring the mechanical fitness of all wrecked vehicles that are genuinely rebuilt.

Cargo Securement

Regulations
Cargo Securement Regulations fall under the authority of the Highway Traffic Act and must be followed by all vehicles operating on public roadways in Newfoundland and Labrador.
