Requirement for a Special Permit

A special permit is required for any person who operates or moves a vehicle or combination of vehicles, object, structure or load that exceeds the weight or dimensions specified in the regulations.

The weights and dimension limits are in the Vehicle Regulations, 2002, under the Highway Traffic Act. A summary of these weights and dimensions are in Schedules A and B. If a carrier exceeds any of the weight or dimension limits outlined in these schedules they must apply for a special permit. The authority of the minister to allow operation above these limits is established in section 6 (Special Permits) of the Vehicle Regulations.
