Guidelines for Certification of Antique Vehicles

The Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club has been authorized by Government to perform the initial inspection and certification for formal classification of a vehicle as an "antique".

In this Province an "antique vehicle" is:

This vehicle is not permitted to operate on roadways without the minimum required insurance coverage.

Criteria for Antique Vehicle Certification

• The vehicle must be a minimum of 25 years old;
• It must be as close to original as possible and in good restored or very presentable original condition; ( i.e., seats, door panels, head liner, carpets, etc. must all be in place and not worn out or torn up); and
• The body must be complete with no rust holes or rough patches on the body, etc.

An antique vehicle does not include:

• kit cars
• hot rods
• custom built, or modified vehicles

No motor homes, custom camper vans, motor cycles, or commercial vehicles operated for occasional summer use are eligible.

The vehicle will be certified as an antique if it meets all of these requirements.

Modifications

Some minor modifications are permitted, such as:

Appearance of the Body

Only period type modifications are permitted, such as continental kits or fender skirts. There will be no alternation of the body chassis or suspension permitted.

Engine/Transmission

The engine and transmission are to be the original types installed in the model from the factory. In some cases, an updated drive train may be permitted if it is of original type and appearance (such as a Chev 265 cubic inch may be updated to a 305 and 350 cubic inch provided it is of original appearance) for the vehicle for which it is installed and has original style top pans, manifold, dome, carburetor and air cleaner. Under no circumstances will performance built engines, torque converters or transmissions be approved.

Interior

The vehicle is to be original inside but may be converted to bucket seats and console provided these are the correct type for that model in that year. For example, a car which came from the factory with a bench seat may be altered to bucket seats if the correct bucket seats are used.

Dashboard

The dash is to be original with correct instrumentation. No altering of the dash is permitted. For example, the cutting of holes to fit gauges or the modifications of dash plates to take gauges will not be allowed. The conversion of the factory radio to AM/FM stereo will be permitted provided it requires no alternation to the original dash.

Tires and Wheels

Tires and wheels are to be of the original type used on the vehicle from the factory and may be factory mags of that year; for example, Mustang's of the 60's with the correct style steel wheels center and trim rings. No custom wheel or wide tires requiring cutting or altering of the wheel opening will be permitted.

Antique Vehicle Registration Requirements

• Proof of vehicle ownership.
• Antique Vehicle Application for Registration and Licencing completed and certified by the Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club. (Please see below for the names and phone numbers of individuals registered with Motor Registration to certify and sign the antique plate application form.)
• Application form for vehicle registration completed by the registered owner.

• Annual registration fee for Antique Vehicle is $75.00.
• Information packages, which include all necessary application forms are available at any office of the Motor Registration Division.

Abuse of Registration Privileges

The Newfoundland Antique and Classic Car Club monitors approved vehicles to ensure that unauthorized modifications are not made and that abuse of the restricted licence plate does not occur.

The Club issues one warning to abusers, and if the problem is not resolved a report will be made to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles for cancellation of these licence plates.
